10 Feb Five-star sports? The Dubai Marathon

The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, now in its 15th year, ended on 24th January with the triumph of the Ethiopian Tsegaye Asefa Mekonnen, who, in his debut at the age of 18, crossed the line for first in 2h: 04m: 32s ahead of his compatriots Geneti Guteta and Birhanu Gebru. Mekonnen triumphed at the end of a grueling and expensive race that tested the stamina of marathon runners, under the eyes of millions of viewers. The young Ethiopian athlete has clear ideas about his future: as he stated at the end of the race, his next target will be in 2015 beating the world record set in the Berlin Marathon in 2013. In the women’s category the Ethiopian athlete Mula Seboka triumphed achieving a time of 2h: 25m: 01s excelling on her countrywomen, who classified with her at the first nine places.

The 42,195 km long route winds its way through the main streets of the city through Umm Suqeim Road in the heart of the city center to Jumeirah Beach, the tourist area, known for the famous Burj al-Arab (Tower of the Arabs).
