28 May EXPO 2020 Dubai
The UAE has wone to be the host to the World Expo 2020 in Dubai under the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”.
The Story of World Expos
The Great Exhibition, held in London in 1851, inaugurated World Expos as the hallmark events of a world aspiring to strengthen its connections, celebrate its cultural diversity and marvel at its technological wonders.
Today, World Expos remain a key meeting point for the global community to share innovations and make progress on issues of international importance such as the global economy, sustainable development and improved quality of life for the world’s population.
Every five years, World Expos attract millions of visitors who explore and discover pavilions, exhibitions and cultural events staged by hundreds of participants including nations, international organisations and businesses.
Each World Expo is a catalyst for economic, cultural and social transformation and generates important legacies for the host city and nation. For instance, Shanghai 2010 World Expo helped transform a heavily industrial city-centre area into a thriving cultural and commercial district while also bringing its theme “Better City, Better Life” to the attention of 73 million people.
The next World Expo takes place in Milan, Italy, 2015. The focus: “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.
Expo 2020 beings UAE’s success
Dubai will host the world Expo in 2020, marking the first time the World’s fair will be held in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia region. As one of the largest and oldest mega-events, the Expo will launch the United Arab Emirate’s Golden Jubilee celebration, serving as a springboard from which to inaugurate a progressive and sustainable vision for the coming decades.
Dubai’s World Expo is held under the theme of Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, echoing the powerful spirit of parthership and co-operation that has driven the UAE’s success in pioneering new paths of development and innovation. The country is targeting 25 million visitors around the 2020 Dubai Expo of which 70% will be international, and expects to host over 200 participants- the highest international represenation in the history of the World Expos.
Theme of the EXPO 2020
Dubai has a long history of facilitating connections and pioneering new ideas and Dubai Expo 2020 would be no different, with a predicted 70 per cent of the expected 25 million visitors originating from outside the host nation, making it the most international event in the history of Expo.
It would therefore provide a unique platform for the global community to come together and explore creative and pioneering solutions to the three subthemes which have been identified as key drivers of global development:
The focus will be on exploring their interdependencies and identifying potential partnerships, ultimately resulting in a legacy of innovation.
Venue for Expo 2020 in Dubai
The site for World Expo 2020 Dubai will be Dubai Trade Center–Jebel Ali: a 438 hectare site on the southwestern edge of Dubai.
Equidistant from the centres of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the site is located next to the new Al Maktoum International Airport and also located in close proximity to Jebel Ali Port, the third busiest port in the world.
Last year alone, more than 51 million passengers travelled through Dubai International Airport, where 150 airlines serve 220 destinations on six continents. Led by the success of Emirates Airline, the world’s fastest-growing airline, Dubai Airport is now poised to be the world’s busiest international airport by 2015.
The logistical advantages of the site both for exhibitors – bringing in materials and constructing pavilions – and visitors, are clear.
Securing an architectural legacy from Expo 2020, after the event the Dubai Trade Center–Jebel Ali will be a lasting and working monument to the power of connectivity: a place for people to come together and make a difference.
